Dr. Peter Kamau Wanyoike is a trailblazing neurosurgeon with over two decades of experience advancing neurosurgical care in Kenya and beyond. A visionary leader, he is the Founder and Chief Neurosurgeon of the Brain, Spine & Rehabilitation (BSR) Hospital—the first specialized neurosurgery and rehabilitation hospital in Kenya—where he continues to shape the future of neuroscience, stroke care, and rehabilitation medicine.
Dr. Wanyoike began his career as a general surgeon before pursuing advanced neurosurgical training, including fellowships at St. Louis University and Washington University in Missouri, USA. He holds a Fellowship of the College of Surgeons of East, Central and Southern Africa (COSECSA) in Neurosurgery and an Executive MBA from Copenhagen Business School in collaboration with Mount Kenya University. He is currently pursuing a Law degree (LLB) at the University of Nairobi, further strengthening his commitment to healthcare leadership and policy.
Over the years, Dr. Wanyoike has pioneered several groundbreaking initiatives:
- Founder of the first specialized Neurosurgery & Rehabilitation Hospital in Kenya.
- Established the first multidisciplinary breast clinic at Kenyatta National Hospital.
- Led the creation of Kenya’s first comprehensive disaster management plan at Kenyatta National Hospital, and served as Chair of the hospital’s Disaster Management Committee.
- Spearheaded the development of a National Clinical Stroke Program in partnership with the Ministry of Health.
- Set up neurosurgery services at Kiambu Level 5 Hospital and coordinated neurosurgery missions across counties.
- Represented Kenya internationally at conferences, including the World Congress of Disaster and Emergency Medicine (UK), the Global Spine Congress (Singapore), and the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (USA).
Dr. Wanyoike is widely respected for his leadership in disaster preparedness, having coordinated responses to major national emergencies including the 1998 US Embassy bombing, Westgate attack, and the Kenya Airways Abidjan crash.
He is a member of several prestigious international and regional professional associations, including the North American Spine Society (NASS), the Congress of Neurological Surgeons (CNS), and AO Spine International. His pioneering spirit and unwavering dedication have earned him recognition as the first non-American Vanguard Leadership Scholar in Neurosurgery.
Dr. Wanyoike is also a Certified Arbitrator and Mediator by the Chartered Institute of Arbitrators (CIArb).
